A few years ago I met a young man who was new to this country, he had only been here in Ashburn for about a a hear and a half at that point. He was raw on the basketball court but had incredible athleticism at his size. Obina Ejike and I were introduced by a mutual friend who knew that I could help him develop the skills he needed to go with that athletic ability. I had never had the opportunity to work with a player from Nigeria before who had that raw athleticism and toughness, but I knew I could make a difference.
Over the past two and a half years of training Ejike I’ve learned to refer to my time with him as an opportunity. The dedication, effort, and passion he’s put into his development has been almost eye opening for me. I’ve never been around such a humble and hungry player who WANTS to be coached more than he. It is so refreshing to be around players who share the same passion for the game but exciting to think that player is 6’9″ with a 7’3″ wingspan!
We would like to say a huge congratulations to Obina Ejike on his commitment to attend and play basketball at Vanderbilt University. It was a tough choice as all of his hard work and effort gave him other great options too (Florida, Clemson, Oklahoma, Va Tech). We truly feel he’s landed in a place he can call home over the next 4 years and grow as a student, basketball player, and person.
